Film Set Arrangements
February 2025
In one weekend we were asked to make arrangements for not one but two film sets!
One was filming for a piece about the Titanic. One arrangement was for a bedroom for someone in a low class room on the ship. These rooms where typically decorated with lily of the valley to fill the rooms and hallways with its scent. We arranged the lily of the valley in a basket which we sprayed brown to match the wooden furniture. Some eucalyptus was also added to compliment the floral scent.
This set also wanted an arrangement for a main room of the ship. This arrangement was a triangular pedestal, a very popular shape during that time. It included palm leaves, eucalyptus, antique carnations and roses which appeared a dusty pink, lisianthus, lilies and stock.
The other company were also filming or an older time period. They wanted all dry flowers in a fan shape with muted tones of beige, purple and red. Pampus grass was key for this arrangement to perfectly capture the shape as it naturally fans in the direction placed. It was accompanied by bunny tails, cotton and arranged in a dusty grey basket, true to the colours and vibe of the time period.
Flowers on a film set are used for various reasons, including symbolism, aesthetics, and enhancing storytelling. They can represent emotions, themes, and can foreshadow events. Incorporating flowers thoughtfully into film sets can ultimately enrich the audience's experience, making the visuals more engaging and memorable.
